Working with teacher initiated entries

Learn more about how teacher initiated entries can be used.

What is a teacher entry

Teacher initiated entries (also teacher entries) are ideal for adding an entry to a journal which is not supplied by the students themselves but by an educator instead.

Whereas by default all journal content is owned by the journal's authors, teacher entries form the exception.

Creating a teacher entry

Navigate to the journal overview page of your assignment. Click on Post Teacher Entries in the Actions menu on the right hand side.

This will open the teacher entry creation menu.

  • Title: the title is displayed in the timeline and is used to identify the entry.
  • Select a template: just like student entries, the blueprint for the entry is based on which template is used.

After selecting a template, additional options are unlocked.

In this example we opted to use the template "Lecture Slides", which can be used to upload a slide deck as PDF.

After filling in the template related fields, all that remains is to decide which journals should receive the entry and whether we should grade and/or lock the created entry.

Selecting one or more journals

Teacher entries can be added to multiple journals in a single action. The Journals to Add field allows you to select one or more journals via selection and can be searched.

It is also possible to add multiple journals in bulk. This is done by clicking select by username, and then providing a list of usernames (e.g. provided by a spreadsheet column) and pressing enter.

Grading or locking the entry

You can prevent students from making any edits to the teacher entry by setting a grade.

If setting an entry grade does not fit your workflow, but you would like to prevent students from making any edits, set the grade to 0 to lock the entry without providing a grade.

It is possible to set a different grade for each journal

Once you have selected one or more journals, and decided whether the entry should be locked or graded, click Post to finalize your teacher entry and take you back to the journal overview page.

Managing existing teacher entries

Once you have created your first teacher entry, the Actions menu on the journal overview page will be extended with Manage Teacher Entries.

Assignment actions manage teacher entries highlighted

Selecting this action will take you to the Manage teacher entries menu, where you will be prompted to select an existing teacher entry.
